Many of us spend part of our lives learning what love is not. Falling in and out of love with the wrong people. Wrong, in the sense that they cannot love us the way we need or want to be loved. But sometimes we get lucky and the real thing comes along and takes us by surprise. And it isn’t anything like what we thought it would be. We don’t have to pretend to be somebody else to be loved. We don’t have to hide what we think are the ugly or unacceptable parts of us. We meet the miracle of true love and find that someone who will love us, not in spite of, but because of who we are. And we learn that love can come, and it can be real, and it can endure. And that sometimes someone can love us, even more than we love ourselves. And perhaps then we can finally say the words I say in my poem “So this is Love” and we know we are blessed to have found our one and only true love.
So This Is Love
You do not give up
You do not leave
You do not say this is enough
This is too much
You do not say
This is not what I expected
This is not what I wanted
What I signed up for
You do not stay
And go in silence
Your body next to mine
Your heart checked out
You see the beauty
Even when I see only the beast
You hold and comfort her
Even when I whip and lash her
You do not give up
Even when I do
You forgive me
Even when I cannot forgive myself
You are my miracle
My greatest gift
You are my teacher in love
You are my love
