The Greatest Love
What was Your crime?
Why were You hated, despised, spat upon?
Why did a spear pierce Your side?
Why were You crucified with thieves?
What did You do?
You simply loved us so
Why do we turn from You?
Why do we forget?
Forget the love
That gave us life
The love that for our sake destroyed death
For a price only You would pay
The love that forebears
The love that forgives our trespasses
And receives us back time and time again
Without reproach or regret
Oh, how we betray You
In what we do
In what we fail to do
To love each other as You loved us
Is it too much to ask?
Why do we fail You?
You asked no more
We gave You less
And yet You love us
What have we done to deserve Your love?
You love us so
How can we understand
The love that created love
The love that is only love
We can only give thanks
For the mystery of the greatest love
That died on that cross in Calvary
The love that rose again
That we call our Saviour and Lord
The love that redeems us
For the children we are
For the Father who loves us
Not because, but in spite of
The love that loves us still and always
That makes our home
And welcomes us
Simply because we are His
And He is love
